Identify and select a "real" physical space.
Your task is to recreate the essence of this "real" space in the "virtual" domain. In other words, you are charged to produce some digital re-presentation of the space you select that reflects the unique characteristics of the original "real" space. Your final recreation may be in the form of a creative web site, a manipulated image or series of images, or, if you know how to use 3D software, mix sounds or edit digital video, you may use those forms in your interpretation.
We are not interested in a direct documentation or visual modeling of the space. Merely producing a 3D model, photographic documentation, or architectural schematics of the space does not fulfill the assignment (although any of these may be useful components of your project). Rather, you are to think of your space as a multidimensional, multifaceted environment. Think about the social, political, emotional, and/or relational aspects of the space you select. In your attempt to translate your "real" space, you must think about the space as something more than a simple physicality, but rather as a complex point of intersection between people, architecture, functionality, history, etc.
Things to consider in recreating the essence of the space:
What is the space used for?
Is it a crowded or an empty space?
Is it noisy or quiet? What type of sounds?
Is it bright or dark? What is the quality of light?
Is it Cramped or spacious? High or low?
What is the temperature? Pace of movement? Smell? Comfort level?
What is the feeling you get when you are there? Does that feeling change
over time?
Cautionary suggestion: your bedroom is a pretty obvious and therefore unoriginal choice try something else! .
Remember your virtual representation is not governed by the same physical laws as the "real" space. Be aware that it's not necessary to catalog every aspect of the space you select. Feel free to focus on particular aspects of a space that may interest you and/or you may find to be creatively stimulating. What is possible to reflect in virtual space that cannot be represented in the realm of the real?
Evaluative Criteria:
- creative risk-taking
- technical proficiency (the project works, not that it reflects an
outrageous level of technical knowledge or accomplishment)
- successful merging of form and content
- effort
